More accessible and inclusiveChildren's playground in Merl park to be modernised next year

The children's playground in the Merl park, which despite its name is actually located in the Luxembourg City district of Hollerich, was first set up in the 1980s and will undergo renovations in 2023.

The playground is scheduled to be modernised in winter 2023 so that it becomes more accessible to wheelchair users and offers a more inclusive range of attractions.

Luxembourg City Alderman Serge Wilmes, who is in charge of municipal parks, commented on the project: “Regardless of whether children are bound to a wheelchair or a pram, they should be able to make use of the playground. That is why a course with ramps that anybody can use will be set up.”

Making the playground more inclusive is however not the only reason why the modernisation process will take place, noted the politician from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV). He further shared the municipality’s intention of installing solar sails to protect children from sun rays and bad weather in general.

The municipality of Luxembourg City also took proposals from citizens into consideration ahead of the construction launch. Alderman Wilmes thus explained that only natural materials, such as wood, will be used on site, as this was important to people living in town.

The playground in the Merl park extends over a surface area of 8,000 square metres. None of the nearby trees need to be removed during the modernisation works.

The centre piece of the playground will be a large ring of swings, announced the CSV politician: “Swings remain the most popular attraction among children and parents, which is why we will add many more.” Furthermore, there will be water-based games and areas specifically dedicated to infants.

The municipality estimates that renovation costs will amount to a minimum of €3.3 million. A call for construction plans will be launched in autumn this year.
