A bomb from the Second World War was discovered during expansion work at the central railway station in Luxembourg City on Wednesday, prompting preventive evacuations. At around 2.50pm, the defusing work was completed.

The large security perimeter has been lifted and the surrounding area is progressively reopened to traffic, the police announced.

The gradual resumption of train services began at around 6 pm.

Several buildings had been evacuated, including the entire railway station and neighbouring buildings.

At the end of February, an aerial bomb weighing at least 250 kilograms was found on the same site during evening traffic.
