On Tuesday morning, the Minister for Energy took to Twitter to confirm that energy provider Enovos will "significantly raise its gas prices" and to warn that others will likely do the same.
"I am aware that the price increase will be a heavy burden for many people and businesses, we have to prepare for a tough winter ahead", tweeted the Greens Minister on Tuesday morning.
The government has to continue with its temporary gas subsidies and introduce new targeted measures to help those suffering most from the price increase, the Greens' Minister further noted. For more information on aids, people are advised to visit the website energie-spueren.lu.
European Commission President Von der Leyen recently announced a reform of the European electricity market and stressed that preparations are already underway. She further stated that the current system had been developed for different purposes and is no longer up to date.
A new reform is also set to bring an end to the merit order, which allows the priciest energy providers, gas plants at the moment, to set the price. If passed, the reform will allow consumers to get cheaper electricity from solar and wind operators.
Energy Ministers from across the European Union are further scheduled to meet next Friday for a crisis session.
