Ombudswoman Claudia Monti and the Ombudsman for the Children and Youths (OKAJU) Charel Schmit have published their special report on the socio-educational centre for minors in Dreiborn, alleging serious deficits in the facility on several levels.

The report, destined for the Chamber of Deputies, outlines a variety of problems that affect the centre for minors, including lack of space, assaults, staff shortages, and the hiring of a private security firm.

According to ombudswoman Monti, the site already worked with outdated concepts from the 1990s when it opened in 2017. It therefore did not come as a surprise to experts in the field that revolts and physical altercations started occurring more frequently over time. So far, there has not been a clear separation of tasks, nor has there been an emergency crisis plan for the facility.

Nevertheless, the report also expresses hopes that the planed reforms of the youth protection act and juvenile law will help advance the care of minors in Dreiborn.

On Wednesday morning, MPs in the Chamber of Deputies were thus presented with a list of concrete areas in urgent need of improvement.

A report on the situation from the government council is still in the making.
