The discount reduces the price of petrol and diesel by 7.5 cents per litre.
The fuel discount might be extended by a month. The proposal is allegedly being considered, according to information confirmed to our RTL.lu colleagues by well-informed sources.
The measure, originally proposed by the tripartite to mitigate certain effects of the substantial increase in energy prices, was supposed to expire at the end of July. According to information obtained by RTL, the government now intends to keep the policy in place for an extra month, i.e., until the end of August. It is said that the reason for this is that a similar measure in Germany will also be in place until the end of August. The Luxembourgish government thus seeks to align its policies with those of the Grand Duchy's neighbouring country.
This one-month extension will cost the state about €50 million.
The Government Council is anticipated to discuss the proposal on Friday.
Certain tax reductions previously announced by Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes will be included in the draft budget set to be tabled in October. It is also anticipated that the Green Party's (Déi Gréng) proposal to modify the accelerated depreciation on newly constructed rental properties would be put into effect.
