While fuel prices in Luxembourg increased on Thursday, they decreased in Germany on Wednesday. This has led to an unprecedented situation: it is now cheaper to fill up your tank on the other side of the border.

The German government recently decided to decrease the energy tax on fuel for a period of three months to help people cope with elevated prices. As a result, fuel costs less in Germany than in Luxembourg as of Wednesday, 1 June.
In the region of Trier, the price per litre of SP95 was €2.089, €2.149 for SP98, and €2.199 for diesel. On Wednesday, prices fell at German petrol stations near Luxembourg and Lorraine, although not always by the same amount.

SP95 was listed at €1.779 at the Total station in Trier, SP98 at €1.859 and diesel at €1.859 at the station in Heidweiler, which is about 30 kilometres to the north. These are the cheapest prices in the area. In Trier itself, the cheapest litre of diesel can be found at the Aral station (€1.959), while the Shell station is where you want to go for SP98 (€1.899). These prices may vary slightly from day to day, but the discount is substantial.

Luxembourg, France, or Germany?

In Luxembourg, 50 litres currently cost:

  • Diesel (€1.865): €93.25 🟢
  • SP95 (€1.983): €99.15 🟡
  • SP98 (€2.227): €111.35 🔴

In Trier, Germany, 50 litres currently cost:

  • Diesel (€1.959): €97.95 🟡
  • SP95 (€1.779): €88.95 🟢
  • SP98 (€1.899): €94.95 🟢

In Thionville, France, 50 litres currently cost:

  • Diesel (€1.963): €98.15 🔴
  • SP95 (€2.066) : €103,30 🔴
  • SP98 (€2.139) : €106.95 🟡

At the moment, it is still worth your money to fill up with diesel in Luxembourg, but the differences are decreasing since the latest price hike on Thursday (a full tank is €4.70 cheaper than in Trier and €4.90 cheaper than in Thionville). Nevertheless, in the French region of Moselle, there are still about twenty petrol stations where the price of diesel is lower than in Luxembourg (in Metz, Montigny-lès-metz, Moulins-lès-metz, Bitche, Fontoy...).

On the other hand, if you’re looking for SP95, you might want to fill up in Trier since the price of SP95 is €10.20 cheaper than in Luxembourg and €14.35 cheaper than in Thionville. As for SP98, it is €16.40 cheaper to fill up in Trier than in Luxembourg and €12 cheaper than in Thionville. Motorists near the German border should thus take note: if you want to save money on a full tank of SP95 or SP98, you will want to go to Germany!

In fact, SP98 became cheaper in France than in Luxembourg last night. Even if the savings are greater in Trier, motorists will still save an average of €4.40 on a tank of petrol by refuelling in the Thionville area, rather than in Luxembourg. Who would have thought?

Petrol stations with cheaper prices include Bouzonville (€1.829 per litre of SP98), Bitche (€1.946), Rémilly (€1.979), and Vitry-sur-orne (€1.980). In total, more than 70 petrol stations in Moselle are offering lower prices than in Luxembourg!

Prices soar in Belgium

Finally, in Belgium, petrol prices are set to reach a new record-high on Thursday. The maximum price of SP95 petrol is €2.138 per litre, a level never seen before in Belgium. The price of SP98 petrol is €2.370 per litre. The maximum price for a litre of diesel is still €2.048. Belgian motorists are thus clearly the worst off.
