In a short email sent Tuesday morning, he informed his colleagues that he would remain as a neutral councillor and leave the CSV group under mayor Emile Eicher, citing differences of opinion.

This means the CSV loses its single vote majority in the council, composed so far of 6 CSV members and 5 opposition members from the DP, Déi Gréng and a citizens group. The opposition was taken by surprise by the move.

The CSV group had a Skype meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss possible next steps and political consequences. Notably the budget has so far required every single CSV vote, with the opposition unanimously voting against. There will likely be troubling times ahead until the next election in 2023.
