The Chamber of Deputies will vote on the latest Covid law on Friday.

The new bill will see the CovidCheck regime lifted from most places, while mandatory masks will apply only to public transport and potential contact with vulnerable people, particularly in hospitals or care homes.

The Council of State said it generally approved the bill, but wished to point out potential issues with the lifting of the mask mandate, as it could conflict with anti-mask laws if people chose to wear face coverings going forward. The legislators would therefore have to use extremely precise language when drafting the bill to ensure people who continue to wear masks are not penalised for contravening anti-mask laws, which in pre-pandemic times applied to people concealing their faces to prevent identification. The Council added that the bill's authors should also express themselves more clearly regarding mandatory masks in specific locations.

The Chamber's health commission met on Thursday afternoon to analyse the Council of State's comments. The new Covid law is expected to last until 30 June.

The government plans to continue running the vaccine campaign alongside the new law, with a view to managing Covid cases into the autumn. Legislators are also working on the text for the mandatory vaccine bill at present.
