The LSAP is now under co-leadership. MPs Françine Closener and Dan Biancalana will take over the party leadership. On Saturday morning, they received 92% and 96% of votes respectively. There were no other candidates for the two positions. Following the vote, General Secretary Tom Jungen stressed that the co-leadership is “another step towards equality between men and women”.

During its national assembly, the party also took a clear stance against the war and condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The party rallied behind its Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn, who declared that the war could no longer be stopped by diplomatic means. On the other hand, Asselborn expressed optimism regarding the reception of refugees, stressing that “we will get it done”.

Minister of Health Paulette Lenert also spoke about the war in Ukraine, acknowledging that politicians had “underestimated” the situation. Some party members held up signs in the colours of the Ukrainian flag to show solidarity.

Regarding national politics, Lenert stressed that faced with the high inflation rate, aids must be distributed “wherever possible”. The Minister stressed that the government wants to provide “targeted support” both to the public and to companies.

For the LSAP, political priorities in Luxembourg are the housing crisis, property tax reform, climate change, and education, Dan Biancalana announced. The party accuses Minister of Education Claude Meisch from the Democratic Party (DP) of privatising public schools. On the other hand, party members praised some of the LSAP’s own ministries, i.e. the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Economy. The general consensus was that Luxembourg weathered the pandemic well and avoided a wave of bankruptcies.
