Travel restrictions, teleworking and CovidCheck measures have left hotel rooms empty over the past few weeks, in a repeat of 2020 conditions.
The hotel sector has struggled through the pandemic. And Wednesday's announcement of further government restrictions will not ease the situation any time soon. RTL spoke to Luxembourg City hotel owner Carlo Cravat about the worsening situation, which carries echoes of 2020's festive period.
"We are really in a jam", said Cravat, whose establishment currently has just three occupied rooms out of 59 available spaces. Business tourism is virtually non-existent.
Back in September 2021, reservations increased slightly, offering a tiny beacon of hope, but as the months have passed, hoteliers are preparing for another difficult year in 2022.
Although the government has offered financial support to the sector, it has experienced heavy losses.
Cravat added that obtaining the financial aid on offer has often been accompanied with delays, causing many business owners to seek emergency loans from banks in order to pay running costs and staff wages.
