Police have reported a number of scam calls from a Luxembourgish mobile number (starting 671).
The English-speaking scammers claim to be part of the Grand Ducal police, Interpol or Europol and try to extract personal information from their victims.
There have also been e-mails in a similar vein, asking the recipient to transfer money for a fine.
Police stresses these are not common procedures the police would employ and every police officer can speak Luxembourgish, German and French.
- Ignore calls from unknown foreign numbers without hanging up (let it ring, do not press away) to give the callers no indication that the number is still in use.
- Never call back unknown foreign numbers.
- Block the caller on your phone.
- Do not respond to any demands or threats.
- Never give out personal information by phone.
- Check your phone bill and report to the police if you have been harmed.
They also recommend warning friends and relatives, especially older people who may not be familiar with this type of scam.
The same goes for any calls you might receive purporting to be from the Ministry for Justice. These have been in French or English.
