The Democratic Party announced at a press briefing on Friday that Yuriko Backes had been selected to replace outgoing minister Pierre Gramegna, who announced his resignation earlier this week.

The party held an executive meeting on Friday to determine Gramegna's replacement, before making the announcement to the press.

Backes, who turns 51 this month, has held the position of Marshal of the Grand Ducal Court since 1 June 2020, and previously served as head of the Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg. From 2010 to 2016 she served as a government adviser both to Xavier Bettel and his predecessor, Jean-Claude Juncker. She will be the first woman to assume the position of Minister of Finance in Luxembourg.

According to Friday's statement, Gramegna will continue to work on the budget for next year until it has been approved in the Chamber of Deputies. The changes to the government ministers will take place in January, when LSAP ministers Dan Kersch and Romain Schneider will also be replaced by their fellow party members Georges Engel and Claude Haagen.
