About 550 people have successfully completed their training in the last three years.

Since 2018, those with a bachelor's degree in a discipline that has at least some relation to the profession of a teacher have the option of participating in a specialised programme for so-called Quereinsteiger ("lateral entrants"). After successfully completing an in-service training course of around 250 hours, candidates are able to become teachers under the same conditions as holders of a bachelor's degree in educational science.

More than 800 people have enrolled in the recruitment programme, 180 of whom will start their training during the 2021/2022 school year. Approximately 550 people have successfully completed their training in the last three years.

While the programme officially ends in September 2023, Minister of Education Claude Meisch has already hinted that a new option to enter the education sector is already under discussion.

Rather than directly recruiting people, this new mechanism would operate at university level, Meisch explained. Specifically, the idea is to offer holders of a bachelor's degree with some relation to the teaching profession, for instance psychology, the option of completing one additional year at Uni.lu to graduate as a certified teacher.

In parallel to the studies in educational sciences, which directly prepare candidates for the teaching profession, this solution would offer the possibility of accessing it through appropriate studies. Discussions with the University of Luxembourg and other stakeholders are ongoing, according to the Minister. The first concrete decisions on the matter are expected to be taken in the upcoming months.
