Witnesses reported a loud bang, following which a piece of work equipment caught fire.

The incident took place at around 10am on Friday morning, in woodland just off Rue de Gralingen in Merscheid. No one was injured as a result.

According to reports, the fire was caused after a buried explosive device, dating back to the Second World War, was inadvertently detonated. Firefighters attended the scene.

The army later took care of the device's disposal.
