Despite the fact that Luxembourg was rather quick in reopening its cultural sector in comparison to other countries, artists are still in need of support to make up for their losses. With the help of the “Re-start Luxembourg” campaign, the Ministry for Culture now hopes to deliver on the much needed financial aids.
A total of €5 million has been paid out over the course of a year. Minister of Culture Sam Tanson commented: “Naturally, we were not able to cover everything. We thus launched an appeal to all artists that are registered with us to send in a list of their losses. We then paid €1.5 million in support.”
The Ministry further supported artists by purchasing objects and commissioning projects: “I wanted a systematic approach and therefore created a commission, made up of representatives from the country’s biggest museums. We discussed and coordinated our interests to avoid unnecessary overlaps.”
Minister Tanson also explained how the government issued an appeal for additional art pieces for a first time. The initiative was met with great enthusiasm and numerous applications came in, especially from artists that were less known to government officials.
