Coronavirus weekly reportDelta variant continues to spread in Grand Duchy

RTL Today
Just ninety people tested positive for Covid-19 in the week of 14-20 June, a significant drop compared to previous weeks.

However, the Delta variant continues to spread, making up around 35% of positive cases in Luxembourg - an increase on last week, where it accounted for 30%.

Four cases of the Gamma variant, originating in Brazil, were also detected, as was one of the Beta variant (originating in South Africa).

The majority of cases were found to be the Alpha (British) variant.

There were 90 new infections reported over the last week in Luxembourg, a 52.3% decrease when compared to the previous week. The number of PCR tests carried out remained roughly the same at around 46,000. 230 people reported themselves to the Ministry of Health after a positive rapid test result.

No Covid deaths were recorded in the last week, for the first time since 21- 27 September 2020.

As of 20 June, there were 258 active infections in Luxembourg, compared to 498 the previous week.

The incidence rate continued its downward trend in all age groups, with 14 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over 7 days, against 30 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the week of 7 June.

Hospitalisations

There were no new admissions of confirmed positive COVID-19 patients in normal hospital units, while the number of patients in intensive care remained stable at 2.

Faced with this marked improvement in the situation in hospitals, Luxembourg has once again reached phase 0 of the ramp-up plan, which means that all new admissions can be treated in a single hospital.

Vaccinations

For the week of June 14 to 20, 43,866 doses were administered in total. 25,140 people received a 1st dose and 18,726 a second, bringing the total number of vaccines administered as of 23 June to 505,986 (1st and 2nd dose). 217,234 people are now fully vaccinated.
