Most infections occurred in households where at least one person tested positive for coronavirus.

In Luxembourg, pets do not have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Minister of Agriculture Romain Schneider provided this information in a reply to a parliamentary question by MP Gusty Graas from the Democratic Party (DP).

In the context of a study, 62 dogs and 60 cats have so far tested positive for the virus in Luxembourg. The Luxembourg Institute of Health has worked alongside veterinary practices and the Veterinary Inspectorate to analyse samples from 504 animals to assess Covid-19 infections among animals.

Experts assume that animals usually contract the disease from humans. The most infections were found in households where at least one person had previously been tested positive.

On the other hand, humans only rarely contract the disease from animals. This is also the reason why there are no plans for vaccination. Animals also do not show any symptoms in most cases.

If a pet vaccine comes onto the European market, it is up to owners to decide whether or not they want their pets to get the jab.
