The new Covid-19 law was passed on Saturday afternoon with the votes of the DP, the LSAP, the Green Party, the CSV, and the Pirate Party. Both the adr and the Left Party abstained.

MP Roy Reding from the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr) voted against the draft bill, while the other MPs from the adr as well as those of the Left Party (Déi Lénk) demanded a separate law to deal with restrictions in the private space, at gatherings, in the hospitality sector as well as those applying for sports, educational, or musical activities.

This is the 20th Covid-19 law Luxembourg’s MPs have passed, but the first that rapporteur Mars di Bartolomeo has presented “with joy”, according to the MP’s own words during the debate on Saturday. The politician from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) did not hide his enthusiasm, stating that the country “is now really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel”. Nevertheless, Bartolomeo added, it is important “to remain prudent regarding the dangers that could block the path”.

While these relaxations will “do everyone some good”, Bartolomeo stressed “opening any new doors to the virus” must be avoided. The vaccination campaign is going well in Luxembourg, even though the country remains dependent on the deliveries of the respective pharmaceutical companies.

A majority of MPs agreed that the new Covid-Check will allow a return to a more or less normal life, especially for businesses such as restaurants, bars, or nightclubs. A number of MPs stressed that it was “very important” to them that these businesses would be allowed to return to an almost normal and safe workflow.

While the new Covid-19 law does not force anyone to get vaccinated, workers in the healthcare sector are nevertheless highly encouraged to take up the offer. Regarding schools, pupils are no longer required to wear a mask in the courtyards during breaks. However, masks will remain mandatory inside of classrooms.
