On Friday, Patrick Arendt, president of the OGBL's Education and Science Union (SEW), reacted to the announcement that 120,000 rapid tests will be used in parallel to PCR tests in Luxembourg schools.

Following the rather positive assessment by Minister of Education Claude Meisch, the teachers' union of the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) remains slightly on the fence about the new strategy. The SEW wants to wait to see how effective the measure actually is and wonders what will happen with the positive cases that will inevitably result from these tests.

Arendt pointed out that in the case of pre-school and nursery children, the tests are to be carried out at home and wonders whether all parents will actually report a positive case.

He also deplores the fact that cooperation between the National Health Directorate and the Education Sector sometimes leaves something to be desired and questions whether positive tests will be reported in time. The discretion that usually surrounds testing cannot necessarily be guaranteed in this context, according to Arendt. The SEW president explains that if the rapid test is carried out at school in front of the other pupils, it will not necessarily be possible to keep the result secret and that inevitably everyone will know about it.

This is why Arendt thinks it is important to inform pupils and their parents about this aspect ahead of time.

Arendt also stressed that a number of teachers are worried about what to do if a pupil tests positive and cannot immediately be taken care of by their parents.
