Bars and restaurants will remain closed and the curfew will stay in place as the government announced restrictions will be extended from 21 February to 14 March.
The Covid law will be discussed by the health commission in the Chamber on Monday, before being put to the vote next week.
Minister of Health Paulette Lenert explained the situation had improved somewhat in Luxembourg, with the virus once again under control in hospitals, but the risk posed by the different virus mutations was too large to ignore. In addition to this, the virus presence in the country’s wastewater treatment centres was rising.
The variants have already been detected in schools prior to last week’s closures.
The public must continue to observe the current social distancing measures, reduce their physical contacts and wear masks where required, said the minister.
Businesses which have been affected by the restrictions will be eligible for further financial assistance, added Xavier Bettel, with details to be announced by Lex Delles on Monday.
The Prime Minister also announced the next phase of the vaccination campaign was set to begin shortly, aimed at vaccinating those aged 75 and over. Three more vaccine centres will open across the country, in Esch, Ettelbruck and Mondorf. Invitations are expected to be issued at the end of next week, with plans to vaccinate around 3,500 people per week.
