According to STATEC, 4,649 Luxembourg residents died last year.

The figure represents the highest absolute number of deaths in 70 years. However, if adjusted for population growth, deaths per capita have been in decline.

With the pandemic breaking out in March, overall fatalities in the Grand Duchy rose by 9% compared to 2019.

STATEC reports that 11% of all deaths in Luxembourg were due to Covid-19. For the period between March and December 2020 that figure rises to 13%.

According to official figures, 501 people died of Covid-19 last year.

It is further reported that the average number of fatalities per month has risen compared to the previous two years. November and December saw particularly sharp increases as on average 150 more people died compared to the previous year.

As the population constantly varies, mortality rates need to be calculated using average population. Last year the mortality rate was 7.4% - a similar number was last detected 10 years ago.

STATEC also analysed excess death rates. 14 weeks last year yielded higher than normal death rates and the week before easter in April and the week before Christmas were particularly high due to the spikes of the respective waves of Covid-19.

Excess deaths were higher among men. Last year, the average mortality age was 80.4 years for women and 74.1 years for men. Average mortality ages remain the same compared to 2019.
