The current legal provisions relating to Covid-19 will expire on 1 February. A decision on what to do next must be taken before this deadline.
The MPs of the Parliamentary Health Commission met on Tuesday by videoconference. However, according to MP Marc Baum from the Leftist Party (Déi Lénk), they have not really learned anything new.
Baum explained that Tuesday's meeting was "not particularly instructive". A lot of information was merely repeated, such as that in general, figures are dropping slightly at the moment, and that Luxembourg is in a similar situation to its neighbouring countries. One of the biggest points of concern remains the UK variant B.1.1.7. According to Baum, "no one really knows how to deal with it" at the moment.
It is expected that the commission's members will examine a new draft bill next week, which will readjust the measures to the current situation. MP Claude Wiseler from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) stated that it is definitely too early to anticipate what new decisions will be taken in a fortnight's time. Wiseler acknowledged that it is logical and obvious that the government cannot yet say anything on this matter.
According to information obtained by RTL, the state council will meet on Sunday. The Chamber of Deputies is to be informed on Monday.
Opposition slams government's vaccination strategy
Opposition MPs also did not mince their words regarding the government's vaccination strategy. Both Baum and Wiseler denounced the lack of predictability.
According to Wiseler, the government should be able to clearly define, on a provisional basis, which category will be vaccinated at which point in time. If it was the government's intention to get as many people vaccinated as possible, the MP explained, then they needed to talk unambiguously to the public. Leaving people in the dark and telling them that they still have to participate is not a good tactic, Wiseler stressed.
Other uncertainties on this issue bother both MPs. No details have yet been provided on how people's vulnerability is established, how they are chosen, and when they are contacted.
