The Ministry of Health published a new report to mark World Organ Donor and Transplant Day on 17 October, revealing that seven people donated organs in Luxembourg in 2024.
22 patients received organ transplants last year. 104 patients were registered on the national wait list for transplants in 2024, an increase of 17 compared to the previous year. 48 were new additions to the list, while 2 were removed.
In addition, 36 patients from the Grand Duchy received organ transplants abroad last year.
Martine Deprez, Minister of Health and Social Security, wrote: "Organ donation is an essential act of solidarity. With the implementation of the Shared Care Record (DSP), it is important to give your opinion to clearly express your wishes."
People in Luxembourg can clearly update their wishes regarding organ donation using the electronic shared care record online. When first logging in, users can choose to accept or refuse possible organ donation. This record is then consulted by doctors following a person's death.
The amended law of 25 November 1982, relating to organs intended for transplantation establishes the principle that any person who has not expressed opposition is considered a potential donor.
Last weekend, the Luxembourg Transplant organisation held its annual charity spinning marathon at LuxExpo The Box, with over a thousand participants and supporters each year.
