The National Health Laboratory (LNS) has evaluated 4,000 samples as part of its genome sequencing programme.

Luxembourg’s scientists have thus far identified 10 different variants of Covid-19 in the Grand-Duchy. Three new cases of the so-called British strain have now been found, which takes the total for that particularly variant to 6 cases. The South African and Japanese have not been detected yet.

The LNS currently sequences genomes of 10% of positive cases which puts Luxembourg amongst the top nations in Europe.

Presently, the LNS in Dudelange treats 400 samples per week. According to the Ministry of Health this capacity is due to be increased two-fold. The LNS aims to sequence all positive cases that are being treated in hospitals. Currently, only a select few samples are taken and sequenced from hospital cases.

Provided that the current positivity rate stays the same, the LNS plans to start sequencing 40% of positive cases.
