MP Marc Baum from the Left Party (Déi Lénk) raised the question whether it was a wise choice to rely on the principle of hope when it comes to dealing with Covid-19.

On Friday, the government decided against the implementation of stricter measures, arguing that there were already signs that the current measures were having an effect.

The president of the Health Commission, Mars di Bartolomeo, stated that it was a very delicate trend which the government now needed to turn into a sharp decrease. Bartolomeo pointed out that in the long run such high numbers of infections and hospitalisations could not be sustained.

The opposition parties unanimously criticised both the government’s overall strategy as well as the fact that it still did not present the MPs a clear and transparent step-by-step plan on Friday.

MP Sven Clement from the Pirate Party said that the government was once again wasting time with an unnecessary back and forth between itself, the Chamber of Deputies, and the Council of State. He lamented the fact that draft bills were only being prepared now in case the situation got worse.

Bartolomeo pointed out the hypothetical nature of the situation described by Clement and used the opportunity to once again appeal to every individual’s personal responsibility.

This personal responsibility involves wearing a face mask and respecting hygiene rules. The president of the Health Commission made a point of reminding everyone that complying with the regulations was an act of solidarity as well as a sign of respect for the healthcare professionals in the hospitals, who have been on their last legs for months now.
