Findel testing capabilities30,000 tests conducted at the airport since May

Upon landing at Findel airport, travellers can be tested on the spot or receive a voucher to be tested in a lab at a later stage.

Despite the number of travel restrictions currently in place around the world, Findel airport was busy over the past couple of weeks, and so was the testing station.

On average, every fifth traveller is opting to take a test, the general director of the airport René Steinhaus conveyed. This means that since May, a total of 30,000 tests have been conducted, around 450 each day and 3,000 per week.

At peak times, it even amounted to 650 tests a day, which caused for some delays. The voucher system was therefore introduce to distribute the travellers onto several labs and testing stations.

Currently, between 50 and 70 people can be tested at the airport in an hour. There is however a staff shortage at Findel and a lack of consistency with other airports in terms of evaluation. When it comes to sanitary measures, European standards have been set that are being strictly followed, Steinhaus explained.

The airport’s testing system will most likely reach capacity limitations in the foreseeable future. If more space is needed to monitor the situation, prices are then at risk of climbing in the long run.
