The smaller, localised markets simply do not attract the same number of customers, in part due to the pandemic, but also due to the size and the heat.

RTL went to have a look at the Schueberfouer substitute in Bonnevoie, one of Luxembourg-City's neighbourhoods to have a market.

An anonymised stall owner admitted that the demand simply was simply not there: "We should be making fried fish - but no one's coming to eat fried fish," he says, before declaring in frustration, "there's just nothing going on here."

Aside from returning locals and children, who, after a while, doubtlessly tire from eating the same food, and playing on the same game, the fair is a bit of a ghost town.

The current heat is also not doing much for the appetite, keeping people sluggishly hiding in the cool and the shade, away from heavy food and bumper cars. Luxembourg City subsidised €10,000 to 20,000 per merry-go-round to allow people to ride for free for two months, but President of the Showmen's Guild Charel Hary sees this as insufficient.

"It's not what we expected", seems to be the main message of the day, the same day the Schueberfouer would usually open its doors.
