Trade union OGBL announced this Wednesday that they were told the fusion will come into effect on 6 August. Nine days ago, the trade union addressed a number of questions to board members of Guardian Dudelange and Guardian Bascharage - but did not receive answers. According to OGBL, Guardian has precise ideas but prefers not to communicate them.
MPs also discussed the fusion during a parliamentary meeting on Tuesday. OGBL's deputy general secretary Alain Rolling argued that "unfortunately the MPs did also fail to obtain the satisfaction they wanted."
News of planned fusion were made public for the first time two weeks ago. OGBL voiced concerns over the fusion as the fate of the company's employees and investments remains unclear. The company did not not provide further information about this issue. The future of the Bascharage furnace is also unclear as the company has not yet confirmed that it would invest in its renovation by 2022.
Alain Rolling expressed alarm at this news: if the company does not invest in the Bascharage furnace, this would mean that it will also be shut in 2022. The Dudelange furnace will be shut down in July and the future of its employees is unclear, Rolling said.
OGBL is currently not ruling out industrial action.
