The app uses data from an old address book for the City, which Gilles has overlaid onto an interactive map. Gilles himself explains the purpose of the app as follows:
“These approximately 10.000 addresses offer insight into the social structure of the city at that time. Besides [first name] and surname, the data also include the profession, the floor in the building, and sometimes also a phone number.”

The app: Luxembourg City in 1905So one thing that is interesting is that you can see how the city was divided in terms of social strata over a hundred years ago; another is that you may be able to spot a familiar name or two if you search through the map. Dr Gilles himself found, for instance, Payl Eyschen, who was prime minister at the time.
