In the ongoing affair surrounding the disgraced former mayor of Differdange Roberto Traversini, Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding confirmed she had reported the mayor to the public prosecutor's office for a conflict of interest.
However, another government member has also become embroiled in the affair.
Lawyer Georges Krieger, a member of the Green party, has accused Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg of misconduct. As he claimed on Tuesday afternoon, she was charged with Traversini's file and made a decision considered illegal from a fundamental and procedural perspective. Krieger has since remained the affair the Dieschbourg/Traversini affair, implicating the minister.
The lawyer believes that both elected Green officials acted improperly in the affair concerning authorising works on the former mayor's garden shed. Krieger also slammed the officials for attempting to sweep the affair under the rug, highlighting the lack of records.
Krieger was especially critical about the fact that Dieschbourg and Traversini attempted to hide the evidence. He pointed out that instead of Dieschbourg getting involved and telling Traversini to stop and resign, the minister instead followed suit and actively helped conceal the affair during five weeks.
The lawyer believes the rule of law has been violated and the minister should have followed Traversini's steps in another matter, namely by resigning. Krieger claims she has lost all credibility within the ministry.
More information concerning the affair
Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding confirmed her role in a response to a parliamentary question submitted by ADR MP Fernand Kartheiser. She reported the mayor to the public prosecutor's officer for a potential conflict of interest on 19 September.
The minister detailed she based her decision on article 245 of the criminal code, which defines this type of action - for an official to prioritise personal interests ahead of the general interest - as criminal.
The public prosecutor's office announced it had launched an investigation to determine whether the mayor had acted illegally the same day he resigned from the municipal council.
