The public are also discouraged from carrying out other water activities at the lake and are advised not to eat fish caught from its waters.
Traces of blue algae have been found near all six of the lake's beaches, according to the Ministry for the Environment.
Water samples yielded high levels of cyanobacteria, which can have a serious impact on health. Swimming and other water sports are banned for the foreseeable future.
The public are reminded not to eat fish caught in the lake and to stop any pets from drinking the lakewater.
The drinking water is unaffected by the bacteria as it is drawn from a depth of 25 metres, where the bacteria levels are very low.
The presence of the blue algae was first confirmed at the Rommwiss beach at the beginning of August, but did not spread to the other beaches until recently.
