World Cleanup Day took place on Saturday and saw people all over the world take action against the global pollution problem.
Amongst other areas, volunteers collected litter in both Berdorf and the capital. Whether volunteers found tissues on the ground or plastic in bushes, the issue remained the same - people do not properly dispose of their rubbish and instead through it into nature. The problem also exists in Luxembourg, leading to activists organising clean-up operations.
A notably focus was the climbing site in Berdorf. Organisers hoped to raise awareness among climbers and tourists.
Globally, ever-growing rubbish is polluting forests, meadows, and our seas. The concept of the World Cleanup Day was created in Estonia in 2008. So far, 40 million people in over 150 countries have fought for a cleaner world on that day. The goal is to facilitate sustainability and to create a global environmentalism. The day is reminiscent of the #Trashtag challenge, a viral challenge in which people were encouraged to show before and after photographs of an area of nature they'd cleared.
Activists believe it is especially important to work towards a clean and healthy planet for the future. Cleaning the earth from poisonous rubbish is an important part of improving global health.
Another clean-up drive was organised by Young Economic Chamber in the area surrounding Luxembourg City's train station. 15 volunteers took part in the litter-picking drive.
The Chamber explained that they wanted to raise awareness among children especially and hoped to set an example.
