The once iconic Waldhaff bar and restaurant was subject to a two-year long court battle which ended with the establishment closing its doors. Once the restaurant was ordered to remove the terrace, it stopped its activities.
The issue revolved around the fact that the owner, Marc Hobscheit, had infringed nature protection legislation, as argued by the Ministry of the Environment, by building an outside terrace. The terrace was built at the beginning of 2017, both without authorisation and in a protected area.
At first, the owner began the construction of the terrace in 2012, with the municipal council's approval. The restaurant then added a fabric cover to protect customers if it were to rain. Once this cover became too used, the owner replaced the cover with a wooden roof, which was when the legal battle kicked off.
At first, Hobscheit was fined €20,000, followed by €10,000 in July 2017. The restaurant owner had to close the establishment on several occasions. Then, Hobscheit was ordered to restore the site to its initial state, which meant he had to get rid of the terrace. By this point, the restaurant closed its doors indefinitely.
