Following violent CFL attackIncreased CCTV and police presence to make stations safer

RTL Today
Following the shocking incident last weekend, in which nearly a dozen youths violently beat up two CFL employees, the question of increased security for staff has kept the country's politicians busy.

Following the incident, the Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Francois Bausch, explained that the authorities had already been in the process of installing security cameras at all stations. Trains are also already equipped with CCTV.

The trade union Syprolux called for an increased police presence in trains and at stations, to which the minister responded that he has always supported this idea.

As Bausch explained, what remains to be done is to examine which concept works best for this suggestion. He also explained that the police requires the adequate means to put in place increased police presence.

In fact, Luxembourg's police are currently facing recruitment difficulties, which could make it difficult to increase police presence at stations. Bausch was conceded that even increased measures may not have necessarily prevented the incident.

On Facebook, Bausch described the incident as "unacceptable" and wished the two injured employees a speedy recovery.

"The tragic and sad" incident also revealed an unwelcome truth about our society, he concluded.

The minister, currently in charge of both mobility and interior security, also revealed that the authorities are considering installing cameras on the outsides of trains. However, this suggestion requires additional feedback and verification.

CFL reaction

Luxembourg's national railway company CFL condemned the incident and expressed its shock at the brutality used against its employees. In the statement, the CFL detailed that it is supporting the employees injured in the incident and has submitted police complaints against the perpetrators.
