Both parliamentary commissions had been asked to present conclusions following the open debates. Minister of Health Etienne Schneider and Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises were both present in the meeting with the commissions. The ministers stressed that the government does not intend to implement such a smoking ban as it was not one of the coalition agreement points.
The ministers did, however, reveal that the government does not plan to remain idle. The government will evaluate the first national smoking/tobacco action plan, which concludes in 2020. The evaluation will examine points for improvement, notably whether smoking bans in sensitive areas are respected. The ministers cited hospitals and schools as particular sensitive areas.
The ministers also explained that the government would launch an awareness campaign on a voluntary basis. Actors in the hospitality sector will be able to introduce non-smoking areas on terraces on a voluntary basis.
