StatecWomen in Luxembourg tend to give birth at a later age

RTL Today
The next part of the series examining Statec's demographic atlas looks at births, marriages, and deaths in Luxembourg.

Statec’s demographic atlas reveals that the number of marriages in Luxembourg is on the decline, as 45% of the adult population remains single. Only 43% of residents over the age of 18 are married or in civil partnerships. 7% of the adult population is divorced and a remaining 4.6% are widowed.

As for where the most single people live, they tend to be settled in the municipality of Luxembourg City, making up 52% of the population. The next two popular municipalities for non-married people are Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange.

The highest number of married people or civil parnerships can be found in the north, in the municipality of Garnich. Garnich is then followed by Niederanven. The highest number of widowers tend to live in Mondorf-les-Bains.

Births in Luxembourg

For the last few years, the birth rate in Luxembourg has remained relatively stable. On average, 6,105 babies were born each year between 2013 and 2017. Broken down by municipalities, the most births were registered in Luxembourg City, and the fewest in Saeul.

The birth rate remains at 10.7 births per 1,000 residents nationally, although is lower in the east and west of Luxembourg. The tendency of couples to be married before having children is also on the decline, as only 60% of approximately 30,000 children born between 2013 and 2017 were born to married parents.

Women are also giving birth at a later date. Between 2013 and 2017, the average age of a woman giving birth for the first time was 31.4. At the beginning of the century, this age was lower at 28. Women tend to become mothers at 29 in the municipality of Wiltz, whereas first-time mothers in Niederanven do so a few years later, aged 34.

Marriages

In 1950, an average of 2,580 marriages took place each year. Despite the strong demographic growth that Luxembourg has experienced in the years since, there were only 1,866 marriages in 2017.

Between 2013 and 2017, the marriage rate was lowest in the municipalities of Reckange, Walferdange, and Dalheim. In contrast, the municipalities of Saeul, Goesdorf, and Grosbous had the highest marriage rates.

Statec also revealed the ages of Luxembourg’s population at marriage, men having an average age of 37 years at marriage and women 33.9 years.

The average age at marriage was also lower than the national average in larger and middle-sized towns.

Mortality

Finally, ending with the end of life: in 2017, 4,263 people died in Luxembourg, making the national mortality rate 7%. The mortality rate is of course higher in municipalities with an older population, such as Vianden, Remich, Echternach, Erpeldange-sur-Sure, and Mondorf-les-Bains. The existence of nursing homes in these municipalities has an impact on the mortality rate. The highest mortality rate between 2013 and 2017 was in Vianden at 14.9%. Conversely, Helperknapp had the lowest death rate at 1.7%
