The ranking was published by Skytrax, a website which ranks and reviews airlines and airports which is also a UK-based consultancy firm.
Singapore Airlines took the top spot from 2017 winner Qatar Airways, which is currently at number two. Singapore Airlines managed to get a leg up over their Qatari competitors by having the most modern fleet of jets and planes. Singapore Airlines fly to destinations spread over 6 continents and the airline is well known for their high standards and good service. Qatar Airways at number two fly to 140 destinations across the globe.
The third place also goes to an airline based on the eastern hemisphere: All Nippon Airways. Japan's largest airline flies to 80 international and 110 national destinations.
The rest of the top ten includes Emirates, EVA Air, Cathay Pacific Airways, Lufthansa, Hainan Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Thai Airways. It is noticeable that 9 of the top ten best airlines are based in Asia. Luxembourg's own Luxair sadly doesn't even make it into the top 100 world ranking.

The best low-budget ranking includes two airlines that fly from Luxembourg's Findel airport: EasyJet and Ryanair. Easyjet comes in third place, just behind AirAsia and Norwegian. Ryanair, which has been in the news for numerous strikes and cancelled flights, drops out of the top ten and comes in at number 11.

The leaders of the overall ranking are also doing pretty well on the entertainment side of things, with Emirates heading this particular ranking, followed by Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.

What does Luxembourg think?
RTL.lu users were asked about their preferred mode of travel as well as their favourite airline. As it turns out, a whopping 69% of the 685 users who took part prefer to fly to their holiday destination. The car was voted in second place with only 18%, while camping cars seem to be a rather unpopular third option at only 3%, on par with the people who said their prefer not to go on holiday at all.
Unsurprisingly, RTL.lu users voted Luxair as their preferred airline with 44% of the vote. 13% prefer to use Lufthansa and 12% would chose Emirates. Singapore Airlines, this year's overall winner in the World Airlines Awards, only got 10% of the votes in the RTL poll.
