The 19th 'Gaymat' festival (Luxembourg's version of Gay Pride) was celebrated in front of Esch's town hall on Saturday. This year's celebrations carried the motto: "Open your Mind".
During their council meeting on Friday and in the context of the 'Gaymat' festival, the government approved a new plan, the goal of which is to increase tolerance towards the LGBTQI people. LGBTQI stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, and Intersex.
Co-organiser of the 'Gaymat' festival, Romain Mancinelli-Mirti, says that the LGBTQI community is well accepted in Luxembourg. However, he noted that this is not the case everywhere in the world.
Mancinelli-Mirti stated that he travels a lot for work, even to some countries where gay people are not tolerated and are even prosecuted. He admitted that there have even been times when he felt scared although he confirmed that, so far, nothing has happened to him. Mancinelli-Mirti added, however, that he would not feel safe enough to travel to certain countries, together with his boyfriend.
