Focus, friendship, and firearmsA visit to the shooting range in Brouch

At the Brouch shooting range, gun enthusiasts find camaraderie, focus, and stringent safety standards, but members lament that wider recognition of their sport is still absent in society.

RTL’s Céline Spithoven recently paid a visit to the shooting range in Brouch where she met with gun enthusiasts Nancy Jans, vice president of the range, and Jan Kirchhoff, who both like to come to Brouch for recreational purposes. And, as they explained, the extreme concentration levels required at the range actually help them wind down and relax from everyday life.

Being a member of the club for them is about more than just firing guns. “It is always very social. One meets various types of people you wouldn’t meet elsewhere. Then we train together and you’re occasionally teased for not shooting as well as others, and then we have a drink together. Lifelong friendships develop,” explained Jans.

Safety is paramount at the Brouch shooting club. Regardless of how long a person has been shooting already, every potential new member first has to go through safety training. To club members it is also important to not lose respect of the firearms they use and remain aware of the potential dangers associated with them. Those who fail to take the situation seriously are not tolerated in Brouch, say members, and drinks always have to wait until all guns are safely stored away.

“Naturally there are black sheep everywhere, but we would be happy to have our sport be regarded as an actual sport in wider society and no longer be confronted with the same comments,” concluded Jans.

In 2022, the number of registered firearms in Luxembourg was 88,000.
