On Thursday, a Luxembourg City court sentenced a 72-year-old man to life in prison for killing his son in November 2022.

The incident occurred when the man ambushed his son early in the morning as the victim was on his way to work. After stabbing him multiple times, the assailant fled the scene but surrendered to police following a six-hour manhunt. The victim succumbed to his injuries the next day in the hospital.

Earlier this year, after three court sessions, prosecutors sought a life sentence – a request the court ultimately granted. Judicial spokesman Henri Eippers confirmed the verdict, noting that the defendant was also permanently stripped of his civil rights under Article 11 of the Criminal Code.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court awarded the victim’s relatives €80,000 in moral damages, while the National Health Fund (CNS) was granted €15,200 in material damages.

The trial concluded in late February with a dramatic incident when the defendant attempted to take his own life in court by slashing his neck with a razor blade.

The convicted man now has 40 days to appeal the verdict.
