Minister of Education, Children and Youth Claude Meisch was interviewed on Telé Luxembourg Wednesday evening.
He remains confident that the shortage in staff members will not be a long-term problem, as already 1000 applicants have stepped forward. These applicants include students, music school teachers and youth house employees.
Meisch believes it is extremely important for children to continue attending school. Before the crisis, schools and daycare centres were able to welcome children before 8am, but this is not possible for the time being.
Meisch reiterated that the country remains in crisis, and that therefore the comfort and quality of services cannot be fully met. Nonetheless the minister is aware of the fact that there will be a drastic decrease in available daycare centre spots in the upcoming weeks. One in every two children will not have a place.
The government has extended leave for family reasons for parents with children under the age of four.
In his role as Minister for Higher Education and Research, Meisch has confirmed that extensive, large-scale coronavirus testing will commence next week. Luxembourg's Institute of Health also announced a further seventeen testing facilities. Everyone that wants to be tested can do so, but it is not compulsory.
