Covid cases in care homes279 residents in retirement and care homes tested positive

Exactly half of the country's care and retirement homes - 26 out of 52 - currently have Covid-19 cases.

279 out of a total of 6,500 residents had tested positive by Wednesday evening. These numbers were confirmed to RTL by the Minister for Family Affairs Corinne Cahen. This included many asymptomatic cases, i.e. people who were not ill.

A home operated by Servior in Howald is one of those with a higher number of cases. The first case was discovered mid-October, after which all residents were tested and around half tested positive, according to Nathalie Hanck, communications officer at Servior.

Father’s Day is seen as the likely origin of this outbreak. Residents would have gone out and might not have always been so conscious of keeping their distance.

The number of cases has been declining for a few days, however, and family visits resumed on Monday. The families have of course been kept updated about the situation at all times.

Servior said they were not seeing huge staff shortages at the moment. They employ around 2,000 people and are able to shuffle staff around if one of their homes is short.

The vice president of the Copas, Carine Federspiel, explained that they had contacted people in the health reserve again, and that some of those were already helping out.
