27 new GPs have been introduced in Luxembourg on Tuesday, during the 15th proclamation since the GP training module has been introduced in Luxembourg. Our colleague Anne Wolff asked some of the young medical students why they have decided to become GPs.
Tiziana Francella is is the third and final of her specialisation as GP. As a first point of contact, they need to know about every health aspect: be it cardiology, gynaecology orr pneumology, “we take care of everything”, says Francella.
But this entails a big responsibility:
“You see a large number of people per day, so this is a big responsibility. You need to examine them with care and listen to them, or you might miss something. You might diagnose a stomach bug, but it’s actually appendicitis.”
GPs also tend to have a personal relationship with their patients, often treating the whole family. This trust is particularly important during the pandemic:
“People are afraid right now. In our role as GPs we can answer their questions and relieve their worries.”
Being a GP is a time-consuming job, as you’re often still in contact with patients after work hours or may have paperwork to complete. But this variety is what makes it so interesting, saysTiziana Francella.
