“The conflict in Ukraine concerns us all and solidarity is extremely important,” said Xavier Bettel during a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Monday. On the agenda for their meeting were topics such as bilateral relations or other European issues such as the war.
Bettel underlined the two countries’ different pasts and the similarities between them, as well as referencing the distance between Romania and the conflict in Ukraine. “I can only advise listening to our friends who have a different history, experiences, other fears when they wake up in the morning. Danger hovers above the countries close to this conflict. We have already shown solidarity and support towards the countries suffering the most from the war, and we hope the conflict will be resolved as quickly as possible,” the Prime Minister said.
Iohannis said solidarity is crucial for Ukrainians, but also for Romanians: “The Ukrainians are fighting for us, for our freedom. There is much discussion over the level of approval for solidarity across different states. However it is clear to me that people agree that solidarity needs to be sustainable and authentic.”
Bettel also took the opportunity to announce that 25 Luxembourgish soldiers are due to be stationed in Romania in March, representing the largest contingent of the Luxembourg army abroad.
