Since the 1990s, so-called Stolpersteine - or stumbling stones - made of brass have been laid throughout Europe to commemorate the Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

The stones are placed on the pavement in front of the homes where victims lived before their deportation, escape or arrest.
On Thursday, after a commemoration ceremony, 17 Stolpersteine were distributed at 5 locations in Esch-sur-Alzette, and 4 more stones were distributed in Schifflange.

In both communities, two resistance fighters were also honoured with the Stolpersteine. To date, there are more than 80,000 of these commemorative stones in over 20 countries. Since 2013, around 100 stones have also been laid in Luxembourg.

The Stolpersteine are intended to commemorate the history of the Second World War, but also to draw attention to current exclusions, hostility, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and racism.
