The Luxembourg Automobile Club released a warning at 6am on Friday concerning ice on the roads due to the drop in temperatures. A number of accidents have since taken place, causing blockages and slowing down traffic on roads.

One accident took place on the A3 towards Luxembourg City, at the Bettembourg interchange, causing a traffic jam.

A lorry turned onto its side on Grand Rue in Pontpierre, completely blocking the road, after the driver lost control due to slippery surfaces.

On the CR181 in Strassen, another vehicle overturned shortly before 6am and landed on its roof. The driver was taken to the hospital to be checked.

The roads were more treacherous in the north of the country, where a car came off the road on the N15 in Wiltz, in the direction of Pommerlach.

On the road between Flaxweiler and Dreiborn (CR112), a delivery van crashed on the side of the road shortly after 6am, damaging a fence and landing in a ditch. The driver was not injured. Another delivery truck came off the road from Boudersberg to Dudelange at around 7am due to the slippery conditions.

On Rue d'Esch in Mondercange, a driver lost control of their vehicle at around 6.20am due to ice on a bend and collided with a parked car. It turned out that the parked car did not have valid insurance and was written off. The prosecutor was contacted and ordered the vehicle confiscated.

A similar incident took place between Limpach and Schouweiler, on the CR106.

A car collided with a bus on the CR162 between Hassel and Alzingen in an accident which left the driver injured. According to the police report, witnesses said that a head-on collision had occurred at a bend. There were no other passengers on the bus. Approaching 9 am, two cars collided on Rue de l'Électricité, leaving one injured.

These roads are partially closed to traffic, which is causing traffic jams.

The utmost caution is recommended by the police and the ACL. The police also reminded the public of the obligation to equip their vehicle with winter tyres. Any motorists which are discovered to be using summer tyres on icy roads, thus causing accidents, can be subjected to a fine and have their vehicle confiscated.
