All parties in parliament agreed that something needs to be done to improve public transport in Luxembourg.

The goal of the committee for sustainable development of the Chamber of Deputies is to improve residents' quality of life and future development options, as well as improving public transport links. On Thursday morning, the vice president of the committee, Democratic Party MP Max Hahn, gave an interview to RTL.

A debate about several infrastructure projects that are supposed to be launched in 2019 recently took place in Luxembourg's parliament. Around 24 projects are currently in the works, including the construction of several new bus lanes between Waldhof and Kirchberg and between Waldhof and Gonderange, as well as the expansion of the tram service in the direction of Strassen and Findel. There are also plans to redevelop the Senningerberg motorway interchange.

The costs for these projects will lie between €10 and €40 million and they were developed in order to promote "soft mobility" such as public transport and to lessen the amount of traffic passing through towns. DP MP May Hahn sees many of the reasons for today's mobility crisis in the way things were handled in the past. More and more people are coming to Luxembourg, which requires a host of changes rather than one single large-scale plan to adapt to the situation.

According to the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), one of the most important projects will be to develop the tram system in Strassen because it would mean that fewer buses would have to circulate in the city. CSV MP Serge Wilmes stressed the importance of making these plans a reality as soon as possible and pointed out that none of the parties question the necessity of these kinds of projects.

The Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) said that these projects would not only be a massive investment into Luxembourg's infrastructure but would also serve to strengthen public transport. The Howald interchange station project would be one good example for that.

LSAP MP Dan Biancalana agreed that infrastructure development is a must in light of Luxembourg's population growth.

Further projects include the construction of an interchange station in Frisange as well as the expansion of the A4 motorway between Foetz and Leudelange to allow for a "fast tram line" between Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette.
