In mid-December 2018, a little over 868,000 old Luxembourgish franc banknotes (LUF) were still in circulation.

The Tageblatt newspaper recently published a article on the topic, based on information obtained from the Luxembourg central bank.

All in all, the old Luxembourgish franc banknotes still in circulation are estimated to be worth about 201 million LUF, the equivalent to almost €5 million.

The most common banknote is the 100 LUF banknote (worth about €2.5). A lot of people kept them as a souvenir and more than 780,000 are still in existence today.

Exactly 20 years ago, the fate of the Luxembourgish franc was sealed when the reference price for 1 Euro was set to 40.3399 LUF.

Four years later, on 1 January 2002, the Euro officially replaced the Luxembourg franc.
