Despite being a reality for nearly half of the world, the subject of menstruation continues to be met with silence, stigma, and shame.
In the hope of breaking this cycle, Luxembourg City Museum's new exhibition Et leeft presents historical, as well as more recent, discourses and debates surrounding menstruation through museum objects, interviews, music, film and art.
The exhibition Et leeft (a play on words meaning it’s going...) traces the evolution of menstrual products from the late 19th century to the present day.
While menstruation was once surrounded by superstition and secrecy, today the discussion in Luxembourg has shifted toward issues of freedom, equality, and rights.
This can be seen in initiatives such as the 2021 petition for menstrual leave and the introduction of free sanitary products in public restrooms.
The exhibit will be running at Luxembourg City Museum until July 2026.
