This footage takes us back to a RTL Television reports of the terrible 1956 winter. The wave of cold cost more than 830 lives across Europe that year, with temperatures below –20°C being recorded in the Grand Duchy.
All of the country’s rivers froze solid that year, even the Moselle, which was in the end cleared with the help of dynamite. According to meteorologists, it was the most severe winter of the 20th century. French city Nancy recorded –26°C at one point while the Côte d’Azur got buried under 50 centimetres of snow.
